چکیده

In this paper, we present an evaluation of some of the disk array organizations proposed in the literature. We evaluate three alternatives for sparing, hot sparing, distributed sparing and parity sparing, and two options for data layout , regular RAID5 and block designs, and systems based on combinations of these data layout and sparing alternatives. We evaluate the performance of these organizations in various modes of operation, with diierent reconstruction strategies. It is shown that parity sparing and distributed sparing have improved performance and shorter reconstruction times over hot sparing. It is shown that both block designs as a data layout policy and distributed sparing as a sparing policy reduce the reconstruction time after a failure. We also study the impact of reconstruction strategies and show that at higher workloads, choice of reconstruction strategy has a signiicant impact on the performance of the systems.

Improving Disk Array Reliability Through Faster Repairs

Magnetic disk capacities have grown over the last decades by a factor of at least ten thousand. While the minicomputer disk drives of the late eighties could only store 600 MB of data [5], 8TB or 10TB disk drives are common today. The same is not true for disk transfer rates: they are just one hundred times higher than those of the late eighties. As a result, copying the entire contents of a di...

Multi - Dimensional Disk Array

The excellent reliability provided by RAID Level 5 data organization has been seen to be insuucient for future mass storage systems. We analyze the multi-dimensional disk array in search of the necessary improved reliability. The paper begins by introducing multi-dimensional disk array data organization schemes based on maximum distance separable error correcting codes and incorporating both st...

Permutation Development Data Layout (PDDL)

Declustered data organizations in disk arrays (RAIDs) achieve less-intrusive reconstruction of data after a disk failure. We present PDDL, a new data layout for declustered disk arrays. PDDL layouts exist for a large variety of disk array configurations with a distributed spare disk. PDDL declustered disk arrays have excellent run-time performance under light and heavy workloads. PDDL maximizes...

Disk Array Storage System

Fault tolerance requirements for near term disk array storage systems are analyzed. The excellent reliability provided by RAID Level 5 data organization is seen to be insuucient for these systems. We consider various alternatives { improved MTBF and MTTR times as well as smaller reliability groups and increased numbers of check disks per group { to obtain the necessary improved reliability. The...

Multi-Partition RAID: A New Method for Improving Performance of Disk Arrays under Failure

Disk arrays have been proposed as a way of improving I/O performance by using parallelism among multiple disks. This paper focuses, however, on improving the performance of disk array systems in the presence of disk failures, which are signi"cant for applications where continuous operation is of concern. Although several approaches have been explored, the goals of achieving high performance and...
